Obituary for Bernadette Maron McCloskey

Gracious child and servant of God. Her father's daughter. Her mother's fortitude. A Matriarch. Her children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's champion. Gentle mommy. Loving partner. A Celtic ancestor. Loyal and loving friend. Advocate for the less fortunate and afflicted.

A grateful heart- generous spirit, soul, and resource. A just and fierce defender. Proud to carry her father's name in business. Aww-struck child in all things natural and wonderous. Artist and epicurean. Life-long learner; curious to know and to share. Brooklynite in word, deed and sacrifice. Humorous and wry. A simple women of grace, strength, courage, wisdom, class, hospitality, compassion and humility. A proud outlier- a black sheep extraordinaire. A testament to a life well lived in service to mankind, to the earth, and to God. "More than..."

In true Celtic heritage, her stories and drinking songs were of legends, her vocabulary vast and profane. She was funny, loved to outwit, drank Jack Daniels Green with her tea or on the rocks and savored (loudly) most every bite she ate. As her own advised, never skimp on the bed or the food. And she didn't . "More than...

She often told the story of how she thought the celebrations and rosaries recited in gratitude were for her own birthday since on her birthday at six, our country celebrated VJ Day. She expected parades and fanfare wherever she went-and deserved them. She taught us to celebrate. And we celebrate her now. "More than..."

She was predeceased by her parents, James C. and Mary Maron, siblings Mary, James, Jerome, William, and Therese, life and soul partner, Sonny Payne, a child she lost to miscarriage, and her beloved grandson, Marcos Anthony Durantt.

She leaves those whom she loved deeply including her sisters Anne Staniorski and Patricia Blauth, her children Daria and Adrian McCloskey and his wife Linda, Manolete Payne, her grandchildren: Adrianna Desier Durantt, Matthew Ryan McCloskey, Ryan Luke McCloskey, Luke Samuel McCloskey, current and future great grandchildren including Atlas Roebling, Wyeth James, and Calder Marcos Boyce. As well as numerous close friends and family, most especially Robert Puleo.

In her honor, she asked that we remember her by emulating The Beatitudes and The Corporal Works of Mercy. Be inspired by her love of Nature and Art and give of your talents, time and treasures whenever possible. "More than..."
