Obituary for Lewis M. Reed

Lewis Marion Reed born: Marion Lewis Magrider 12 January 1925 in Portland Oregon. His mother and father separated, and she brought dad and his brother, Bobby east to Pennsylvania, met her second husband and changed dad's name to Lewis Marion Reed. He grew up during The Depression, and was sent to live with his grandfather figure and made gin in the bath tub. By the time he was 12, he worked in the coal mine. In 1941 after Pearl Harbor was attacked he tried to enlist at the age of 16, they sent him home. At 17, his mother signed him in and he enlisted in The Coast Guard which was joined with The Navy during war time. He was sent to the South Pacific for the duration of the war. He married Monica Cassidy in 1948 and lived in Brooklyn New York where he worked for Brooklyn Union Gas Company for 31 years as a field trainer. Lew and Monica had five children; Kathleen, Barbara, Stephen, Michael and Christopher. As the family grew and married there are now seven grandchildren; John, Kristine, Katie, Cassidy, Melanie, Jenny and Alyssa followed by five great-grandchildren; Kevin, Elizabeth, James, Nicholas and Dominick. Mon predeceased dad on 7 December 2017 after in a fall at home and now he joins her after 69 years of marriage and a life well lived.
